Myung Moon (Korean
born Mun Yong-myeong; 25 February 1920 – 3 September 2012) was a Korean religious
leader best known as the founder of the Unification Church, and for his claim that he
was a messiah.
He was also known as a media mogul and an anti-communist
activist.
As of
2012,
the religion he founded claimed five to seven million members worldwide, though
this number is said to be only 100,000 by some ex-members and critics, often
garnering media attention for the blessing ceremony, a
mass wedding or marriage rededication ceremony
(usually presided over by Moon and his wife Hak Ja Han)
which sometimes features thousands of participants. By the time of his death,
the Unification Church's affiliated
organizations had become a multi-billion-dollar empire.
